We left Shreveport midmorning and headed west . . . three sights to see before we hit Denton, Texas where my friends, the Dahotres, live!
Stop 1: The Salt Palace in Grand Saline
Doesn't that sound AMAZING? Well, the building isn't so amazing, but the story behind it is pretty fascinating. Grand Saline is actually home to a giant salt mine . . . where all of our table salt originates. The Caddo and Cherokee tribes were the first to discover the salt deposits, but later, a settler named John Jordon set up a small salt works company there. Morton Salt purchased the mine in 1920, and by 1931 was producing 500 tons of salt per day.
The "palace" itself is made from bricks of salt . . . you can even lick the walls if you'd like. No worries, germs can't live on the salt!!
Stop 2 (unintended): Stuff we saw from the road
This stop was unplanned . . . these sculptures were sitting in front of a feed store . . . for sale
Stop 2 (intended): World's Largest Seahorse
Found this "attraction" on Roadside America too . . . sounded more interesting than it was . . . an old concrete works place that's now closed . . . produced larger-than-life yard sculptures
Stop 3: Buc-ee's
Brandy introduced us to one of these convenience stores while we were in San Antonio . . . they're the "Disneyland" of convenience stores. While they're all over the south part of Texas, the stores haven't opened a store on the route we took yet . . . sadly I couldn't take The Captain to one . . . he would have found it just as fascinating! The pictures here were stolen from the internet!
