Your mom graduated from college today!! Well, actually, her official graduation was in December, but, like most colleges, they didn't have a "ceremony." Today your mom walked!
This degree was hard-earned!
When she chose to start college right after high school, I can't say that I felt she was really ready . . . I encouraged her anyway . . . and I believed in her! UTC was probably not the best choice, but it was a smaller school, so I was hopeful. The year started out badly and just never got a whole lot better for her . . .
She almost didn't get a dorm room that first week because we arranged for housing too late.
The room she was assigned to was small . . . they housed 6 girls in two bedrooms with a single bathroom.
The police were called in because one of her roommates attempted suicide the first weekend they were on campus.
Her other roommates, except for one, weren't the nicest girls.
She changed dorms for the spring semester, but the new roommates weren't much nicer.
The last week of school the cops were called to her room because one of her roommates passed out on the bathroom floor . . . drunk.
I'm pretty sure she was grateful to get that first year over with!
Your mom started at UTK the following fall, but that year didn't go any better for a number of reasons . . . the worst blow came when her father died . . . just two weeks before the semester ended. She never finished her classes.
There were another couple of attempts at taking classes . . . she even tried to complete a medical coding class . . . nothing stuck!
Then one day a spark ignited, and she decided to try again . . . working several jobs . . . taking classes . . . studying . . . slowly finding her footing. Even after she found out she was pregnant with you . . . until after you were born . . . she kept her nose to the grindstone . . . kept up with her classes and school work . . . FINISHED!!!
Your mom's one tough cookie . . . and determined!
When someone tells you something is tough, you just tell them they don't know tough!
