In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb

1 March 2017

I've heard this since I was a small child . . . along with a million other weather sayings:
  • "Red sky in morning, sailor take warning; red sky at night, sailor's delight"
  • "Joint pain, storm's a' coming!"
  • "Clear moon, frost soon!"
  • "The higher the clouds, the finer the weather!"
  • "April showers bring May flowers!"
Consult The Old Farmer's Almanac for all of the meanings. Farmers have always been very dependent upon weather predictions, and before modern forecasting, they recorded patterns, made note of events, watched carefully for slight shifts . . . anything to help them know when to plant and harvest.

Today's quote refers to the first day of March . . .

March is one of those "shifty" months . . . weather is highly unpredictable . . . I've seen all four seasons occur in this month in nearly every part of the country!

People in days gone by believed that spirits or gods could affect weather, and that there had to be some balance. So, if a month came in wild and stormy (lion), then it should end calm and beautiful (lamb).

 Farmers are pretty smart people . . . they've been watching the weather forever . . .

And just an FYI . . . March is coming in like a lion today . . . a pretty angry one . . . we're expecting really bad thunderstorms that may carry hail! Got a text from your dad earlier . . . he's in Indiana . . . trying to outrun a tornado!!
